Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

To all visitors and subscribers, a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Thanks for all the support !

2nd Audition at The Ark (木船) 090909?

A few days back I received an SMS from one of the guys at The Ark “木船”. It’s a confirmation for me singing for Audition round number 2. (I suppose everyone gets a chance).

This time round instead of playing the keyboard and singing myself, I would have to pick two songs and then let their band perform, while I concentrate on my singing.

So if you would like to know how good or how bad I am, live on a stage, do come down for a visit here. It’s on 9th of September, year 2009 or 090909. I guess its 8pm, and you can come with friends for a drink or just to listen to some Mandarin songs by ordinary who dare to step out and go on stage =)

The address is at… I’ll just refer you to this website: http://www.theark.com.sg/contact.html

I would most probably sing 1 of the 2 easy songs, so that the band can play it with ease.

1) Kiss Goodbye - Lee hom
2) Wei Yi - Lee Hom

Ok see you there !

Visiting / Audition at The Ark (木船) 12 Aug 09

Today, I had the chance of doing what I liked 2 years back. The reason 2 years back is because my interest has slightly died down alittle.

My friend Jeffery, one of the regular performers at The Ark Music Cafe, asked me to join them for their Audition. Since I had the time and was quite bored recently, I decided to just take part for fun.

As usual, I requested for a keyboard which I know they do, and performed unplugged than all the other usual Karaoke minus one. This was just a chance for me to perform on stage again, and with less pressure (since this ain’t a competition).

A little history here: Mu Chuan 木船, The Ark music cafe, used to be a place for aspiring stars to perform and promote local music. It has been around for at least 15 years… I think. This performing giggs, also known as Xin Yao, of 名歌餐厅, where you can listen to Chinese Pop Music, in a cafe.

It’s quite a nice place, very near my house, few train stops away. It has a stage with the necessary drum set, one digital piano and a keyboard, and enough space for the singer, bassist and lead guitarist.
Nice comfy crouches, good lighting and just an atmosphere if you like Chinese pop music.

It’s been awhile since I go to Karaokes to listen to new pop music, and that place would be cool, both listening and performing. Awaiting for the auditions results, I would have to see how my interests can bring me to, and if possible a chance to perform a few more times there, or outdoors before I really stop and move on.

Contribute your interesting stuff !

I haven’t been posting stuff here for quite a while… If you notice posts here regardless of whether they are lyrics, Youtube videos, or etc… I haven’t been putting up any.

Had been very busy with life and though I still practice some classical stuff on my piano thingy, there aren’t new updates. I have a few more mandarin song sheets lying around my piano top, waiting to be written into computer understandable format, but until then, this is what life is about.

And so… contribute here!

Now I am opening to all, anyone who thinks they have something to contribute, regardless of web links, youtube links, lyrics and chords (I’ll accept only both lyrics and chords together) and anything that is good knowledge for both singing and piano.

You can mail to me using this contact page: http://www.singwithpiano.com/contact/ and then I can follow up there. And I definitely would thank you all for contributing.

Singers Who Can’t Sing

Taken from the original article here:
http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/getback/53773/singers-who-cant-sing

Everyone is still having a fit about Kanye West’s SNL performance of “Heartless” the other week. Did he lip-synch? Didn’t he? The debate misses the bigger issue: Kanye can’t sing.

Truth be told, ability is not always the most important thing when it comes to singing. The proper amount of attitude, charm, and self-deprecation go a long way to replace actual vocal chops. Ask David Lee Roth and Bob Dylan, two dudes who can’t sing a note but make up for it with sheer chutzpah (and in Dylan’s case, an ungodly amount of lyrical prowess). Singers who know they can’t sing are always forgiven.

Kanye, however, broke the cardinal rule of bad singing. He stepped outside of his preapproved vocal zone.

No one expects Kanye to sing. In fact, no one wants Kanye to sing, because we know he can’t. Write an insanely catchy melody? Yes. Continue to be the biggest ego on the planet? Yes. These are the things we want from our Kanye. But when he begins to think he can pull off a ballad by actually singing it? That’s when he’s gone too far.

There are two kinds of bad singers in the world: the ones who kid themselves into thinking they’re good (Kanye) and the ones who try too hard — all the time. These are the Mariahs, Beyonces, and Christinas (although Ms. Aguilera is learning; her Nina Simone tribute on the Grammy nomination show this month was remarkably restrained). These performers wring the last bit of life out of every note. Just because you can sing every octave perceptible to the human ear doesn’t mean you have to. These singers don’t know when to hold back. They are perpetual vocal grandstanders, sucking all of the oxygen out of the room.

Here are some other legendary bad singers. I’ll avoid easy targets, like Yoko Ono and Michael Bolton. Yes, she inspired the B-52s. Who cares? And Bolton has received his punishment for butchering so many songs by being relegated to “Where are they now?” status. Time has passed him by, and we won’t be hearing from him again.

These folks are ones who won’t go away and, worse yet, won’t learn to sing. Know your enemy, my friends. Protect yourselves.

My music performance experiences last October #2

The next music performance was held in my company’s main lobby, where I was asked to play some Mandarin songs while the other group played some English songs. It was more of a relaxed one, comparing who the audience were.

Some of my experiences and preparations I had were:

- Since these are the songs I always play and sing at home, the chords and lyrics were easier for me.

- Whenever I touch my piano, I always go through some of these songs repeatly, ready to use it anytime.

- As this was a solo performance, I never really played together with the other band. They too never seen what I was gonna play.

- I picked 4 songs, 2 of which were from Jay Chou, and the other 2 for the sake of other older generation, as i suppose they only know some of the “popular” or “classic” songs ?

- There were no score sheets, no nothing. Just me, a slightly OK keyboard, a centrally connected microphone, and my voice. Basically I have chosen songs of a easier to remember chords. Now I know why in Jay Chou’s concert, he picked those songs for his piano singing too, due to easy to remember nature.

- For the singing of lyrics, I have long already memorize them, though I had some difficulties with some words. Anyway, chords were more important because humans hear them very well.

-Finally on the actual day, I had a chance to try the keyboard, the sound system check, a run through of my songs once (I really enjoyed the first part because while I was testing out the sound check, as it was lunch time, many of my colleagues had a glimpse of what I had for them.)

- That run through all of the chords in the songs, and any other errors. Well after that I had about 2 hours break and I had ran out of voice! Perhaps due to poor warm ups, I sang straight away. Oh yeah, I’ve too chosen songs that were easy to sing.

- Ok on the actual performance, there were so many factors that were different from playing at home.

1. The microphone wasn’t sensitive, so I had to stay as close as possible to the microphone.

2. The pedal of the stupid keyboard kept moving, so I had a 80% time sustaining the notes, where 20% of the time I had to press the key to hold the note.

3. I adjusted the microphone slightly to the right, and my keys were playing near to the left!

4. I had a very funny chair height and a keyboard with books at the bottom. Which means I am almost standing upright to sing.

5. The microphone was unable to be held at an angle as it was too heavy. Instead, it was rested on top of the keyboard’s score stand, and then the angle of the microphone head pointed in a strange angle. So I have to project my voice downwards.

Well disasters… but I guess I did it pretty well, after practising so hard at home, the results wasn’t that bad. I was lucky I had a good voice that carried it through.

I hope my experiences are fruitful for those who are preparing themselves for performance too.

My music performance experiences last October #1

Last October, I had 2 performances, one where I did as a piano accompaniment with a band with some very nice girl singers and one I had in in my company’s anniversary, where I play and sing in front of many happily eating audiences.

Prior to these performances, I would like to share some experiences.

The one where I did the piano accompaniment, I did that in front of crows of about 500, in a concert hall. http://www.singwithpiano.com/2008/10/photos-from-my-music-performance/.

They were graudates of a long distance school in Singapore, which was their graduation ceremony. The songs were meant to be entertaining, as the last item after prize and certification presentation.

I was very worried of making a mistake, as it was very easy to be heard, with that good sound acoustic of that hall with the 2 microphones very close to the piano strings.

What I did to prepare myself for 2 songs:

- I had about 4 weeks to prepare and finalize the songs. First I had to mae sure the girls can sing the key that we are gonna play.

- Then I had to come out with the chords, and all thanks to the band’s guitarist where he wrote some of the chords, merging with mine.

- I had to think of an Intro http://www.singwithpiano.com/2008/10/self-composed-introduction-for/, because the organizer wants one.

- I was so stressed when they had book the piano for $250/day for 2 days, which I merely used it for less than 30 mins.

- Once the piano chords and singers part were finalize, I started my full concentration on memorizing the parts and chords. Because in the song there’s a change in key to a higher one, I wil need to transpose up 1 key, which means I have 2 sets of chords to memorize. Not forgetting there’s only piano and guitar for one of the songs.

- During the actual rehearsal, I had played the wrong chords on 2 occasions(oops!) and it was in a relaxed state. I couldn’t really hear the speakers and the sound of the hall, because all I could hear was from the piano itself, so I didn’t know how it felt like to listen from the audience seat.

-For that whole period, I played and repeated the 2 songs almost 200 hundred times! In spite of that, it was all hard work.

On the actual day, everything went smoothly and after all it’s all music.

I hope my experiences are fruitful for those who are preparing themselves for performance too.

http://www.singwithpiano.com/2008/10/photos-from-my-music-performance/
