My music performance experiences last October #1
Last October, I had 2 performances, one where I did as a piano accompaniment with a band with some very nice girl singers and one I had in in my company’s anniversary, where I play and sing in front of many happily eating audiences.
Prior to these performances, I would like to share some experiences.
The one where I did the piano accompaniment, I did that in front of crows of about 500, in a concert hall. http://www.singwithpiano.com/2008/10/photos-from-my-music-performance/.
They were graudates of a long distance school in Singapore, which was their graduation ceremony. The songs were meant to be entertaining, as the last item after prize and certification presentation.
I was very worried of making a mistake, as it was very easy to be heard, with that good sound acoustic of that hall with the 2 microphones very close to the piano strings.
What I did to prepare myself for 2 songs:
- I had about 4 weeks to prepare and finalize the songs. First I had to mae sure the girls can sing the key that we are gonna play.
- Then I had to come out with the chords, and all thanks to the band’s guitarist where he wrote some of the chords, merging with mine.
- I had to think of an Intro http://www.singwithpiano.com/2008/10/self-composed-introduction-for/, because the organizer wants one.
- I was so stressed when they had book the piano for $250/day for 2 days, which I merely used it for less than 30 mins.
- Once the piano chords and singers part were finalize, I started my full concentration on memorizing the parts and chords. Because in the song there’s a change in key to a higher one, I wil need to transpose up 1 key, which means I have 2 sets of chords to memorize. Not forgetting there’s only piano and guitar for one of the songs.
- During the actual rehearsal, I had played the wrong chords on 2 occasions(oops!) and it was in a relaxed state. I couldn’t really hear the speakers and the sound of the hall, because all I could hear was from the piano itself, so I didn’t know how it felt like to listen from the audience seat.
-For that whole period, I played and repeated the 2 songs almost 200 hundred times! In spite of that, it was all hard work.
On the actual day, everything went smoothly and after all it’s all music.
I hope my experiences are fruitful for those who are preparing themselves for performance too.
http://www.singwithpiano.com/2008/10/photos-from-my-music-performance/ 。

Caretakers asked to teach singing - a news article
Schools are being encouraged to hire dinner ladies and caretakers to teach singing following a decline in formal lessons:
Ministers announced today that £40million would be spent over the next three years to get more children to sing at primary school.
They claim music is vital for the development of other skills such as memory, selfconfidence and team work.
As part of the move, they are hiring a series of “singing ambassadors” to take classes.
Most will not be teachers but are likely to be drawn from the “wider school workforce and local parents”, the Government said.
This includes staff such as caretakers, receptionists, road safety officers and dinner ladies.
“They might get kids singing with the road safety officer on the way to school, organise playground skipping songs led by the dinner ladies, or have the receptionist run songwriting sessions,” said the Department for Children, Schools and Families.
But the Conservatives insisted the move smacked of “desperation” – and said the Government should invest more in qualified teachers.
Nick Gibb, the Tory shadow schools minister, said: “Cash made available for this should be focused on teachers because children need to be taught by the best-trained professionals and not by amateurs from other walks of life.” Despite huge interest in singing fuelled by television talent shows such as X-Factor, the number of pupils having singing lessons has fallen by half in recent years.
A government-backed study by the Institute of Education, part of the University of London, found only five per cent of primary schoolchildren had training in 2007.

Listening to music - good for your health ?
Here’s an abstract
WASHINGTON (AFP) - - Listening to your favorite music may be helpful to maintaining a healthy heart, according to a study.
The research team at the University of Maryland School of Medicine announced they had shown for the first time the emotions aroused by music enjoyed by the listener to be beneficial to a healthy blood vessel function.
The team, who in a 2005 study noted the cardiovascular benefits of laughter, presented their work at the 2008 Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association in New Orleans.
“I was impressed with the highly significant differences both before and after listening to joyful music as well as between joyful and anxious music,” said head researcher Michael Miller, director of preventive cardiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center and associate professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

A new Library Section
I have just added a new library section, at the bottom of the right sidebar. The widget shows currently what I am reading now, and click the “View full library link” to see my full library. Basically its just a few books, since most of them are score books.
http://www.singwithpiano.com/index.php?now_reading_library=true
I recommend these books to people who want to start learning music, but aren’t sure if it is right for you. You should have some music knowledge or background before spending an investment on lessons or buying an upright piano!

Photos from my Music performance
The other day I had a video posted here, on some composition that leads to an intro. That performance was held at the Singapore Conference Hall.
This time round I am honoured to be the pianist for this performance, accompanied by a guitarist, a bassist, and a drummist (they are a band themselves), along with 3 wonderful ladies who sang for the graduating students. Here are some pictures:
The ladies and me.

The guitarist and me, taken while we were packing up… wires and stuff…

The ladies with an informal picture !

This was the instrument used. It costs $250 just to rent it for a day, and we had it for 2 days!

Finally, our group photo.

In the next post I will write some of my experiences prior to preparing this performance, as well as the other performance I had in my company. Hope you enjoy the photos!

A new look here ?
Hi guys, I have recently changed the template of my site. This time it is a white theme, but it won’t be for long.
Meanwhile I will need to get a new template that stands out as a music blog, as well as a great resource for music sheets, lyrics and chords. This site also aims to give you free piano resources so that you can sing and play, and it is all possible if you follow me and practise.
I welcome any suggestions for new website templates, and any improvements that you might have.
Please mail them to dennisquek@dennisquek.com
Thanks !
