Lesson #9 - Finding out the scales of a song

This is Lesson #9, where it is recommended you understand music scales before coming to this. In this lesson, you’ll learn the proper building of chords in a song, using the music scales learnt in lesson #8.

Using a skill called playing by ear, you can find out chords easily, and do a great deal of stuff once you know the how to.

Photos from my Music performance

The other day I had a video posted here, on some composition that leads to an intro. That performance was held at the Singapore Conference Hall.

This time round I am honoured to be the pianist for this performance, accompanied by a guitarist, a bassist, and a drummist (they are a band themselves), along with 3 wonderful ladies who sang for the graduating students. Here are some pictures:

The ladies and me.

This was the instrument used. It costs $250 just to rent it for a day, and we had it for 2 days!

Finally, our group photo.

In the next post I will write some of my experiences prior to preparing this performance, as well as the other performance I had in my company. Hope you enjoy the photos!

Lesson #8 - Understanding Scales, a Practical lesson

This is the 8th lesson for this free piano lesson. This lesson is a follow up from the previous one, where I’ve posted the theory for music scales. You need to look at that before this.

Lesson #7 - Understanding Scales, a Theory lesson

This lesson will be a theory lesson on scales, insted of a video one. I will do a video recording in the next lesson. These are some pictures that serve as a guide to illustrate different musical scales.

Scales

These are scales of all majors, represented on the staff, or the standard scores printouts.

keys and scales

The reason why we see the # and b, is because it tells us that for this particular scale, you have sharps(#) and a flats(b). You can also see the number of # or b in a scale.

These order are fixed, meaning when we talk about a piece of music in D Major, it means it start with a D, and has 2 sharpen notes, somewhere. (first note denote first note of a scale) That somewhere will be covered in our Practical Video Tutorials in the next lesson.

There are some relationships between the flats and sharps, but we won’t go into the details. The only thing you need to know is, if a song, lets say Tong Hua “Child fantasy” is a song in G major (1 sharp), then the song has its first note in G, and it has 1 sharp, an F#.

For a song by Jay Chou “Ann Jing” or “Silent”, the first note is in Bb, meaning it has 2 flats (Bb and Eb).

Major scales steps

For theory, this is how a major scale is done. W represents a whole step. while 1/2 means a half step.

Major Scales image

Using your Piano, let’s look what’s a whole step. Going from the first white key (C) to the second white key (D), this is what we call a whole step. This is becase you need to go to the top black key (C#) first and down. This represents 2 half steps, which is a whole step.

Next from the third key (E) to the forth key (F), there isn’t any keys in between. So this is called a half step.

As you can see, all major scales go through the same pattern.

Let’s give it a try. Start any note on your piano or keyboard, and use this concept to “complete” the scale. Remember what you’ve just hit, because that first note will denote the first note of a scale.

Refer to the top picture to see how many flats or sharp is has. Go thru the steps of whole - whole - half - whole - whole - whole - half. You should reach back to your first note, at a higher octave. Start with the white keys, and subsequently identify all black keys as well!

Thanks for viewing !

keys and scales

Major Scales image

Lesson #6 - Playing the arpeggio and running notes

This is just a short tutorial, I don’t expect you to follow it fully. This is like an entry point, you should try to get good hold of this skill, for you to build up your foundation to become better in improvisations.

The arpeggio is one of the exam criteria, but I view it as a finger exercise, for both your left and your right hand. You might think it is stupid, but I didn’t realise it, that it had helped me alot. The other exercise is on running notes, as I am not sure know of a proper name (I suppose there is). Look at the video and you should know what I meant!

Lesson #5 - Playing Dominant 7 chords

My 5th lesson, on the dominant 7 chords. Well I always regard it as “minor 7″ because if you look at the steps counting, this is 1 step down from major 7, so it felt like a minor 7. Just a correction, its called Dominant Seven!

Anyway this is commonly used in pop music because it gives the song a nicer chord with an just 1 added note, the dominant 7. Not all chords are played in dominant 7, but this helps brighten up the song with a little jazzy and unique way, which is what we call music!

Lesson #4 - Playing Major 7 chords

This is my 4th lesson, and this chord here is usually called major 7th. It is not very common in pop songs, because it must fit in with the playng style, and the music as well. But it does add some special taste if you use it for some chords. It is written as C maj7 on a chord sheet, to indicate the major 7.

Lesson #3 - Playing suspended chords

This is my 3rd lesson, its for the chords sus4 that we normally see in chord sheets. This usually appears before the start of a song, or denote the starting cue for the singer to start. It may also be found at the end of a song.

The sus represents suspended chord while the 4 represents perfect 4th.
